PAOLO_18032010_300dpi.jpg

Hjerteknuser i Vega

Paolo Nutini for Bargajazz 2010?

paolo nutini in Barga 2009008

What should have been a short presentation this morning in Palazzo Pancrazi with Paolo Nutini and his parents in fact turned into a rather longer affair with what could be interesting possibilities for Barga. Paolo was there to be presented by the Mayor of Barga, Marco Bonini  with plaque commemorating the fact that he was now putting the name Barga on the worlds music stage. During August Paolo generally spends at least one week on holiday here in Barga and has done so for many, many years – after today’s meetings that may change as it looks as though next year he may actually be working instead of relaxing for his Barga week.   As you can hear in the short interview with Paolo at the bottom of this article, he mentions working with a jazz band in New Orleans and asked about the jazz musicians in Barga.

A meeting was set up between him and Alessandro Rizzardi, the organiser of the long-running and very successful Barga Jazz Festival and at the end of the meeting it was announced that Paolo could well be appearing in some form or other in the Barga Jazz Festival 2010.

The Mayor of Barga, Marco Bonini promised full co-operation with the organisers of the festival in dealing with what could probably be some serious logistical problems once the fans of Paolo Nutini are aware of his upcoming appearance in Barga.

Just to add to the mix, after recent e-mail communications between Paolo and Lucio Dalla the very popular Italian singer-songwriter and musician, has launched the possibility of a collaboration between Lucio and Paolo. It was asked at the meeting if Lucio has ever been to Barga …..

Lucio Dalla (born March 4, 1943 in Bologna) is a popular Italian singer-songwriter and musician. He also plays clarinet and keyboards.

He is the composer of Caruso (1986), which has been covered by numerous international artists. A version of Caruso sung by Luciano Pavarotti sold over 9 million copies and the song was a track on Andrea Bocelli’s first international album Romanza which has sold over 16 million albums world wide thus far; the song is a tribute to the emblematic opera tenor Enrico Caruso. source Wikipedia

Paolo Nutini: Sunny Side Up (Skotland)

Vind ugens album!

Nutini works with The View's Kyle
Paolo Nutini will work with Kyle from The View
pa.press.net

Paolo Nutini is to collaborate with fellow Scot Kyle Falconer from The View.

According to the Daily Star, 22-year-old Paolo said: "Kyle from The View is such a good songwriter and he's for real - in the early hours one morning we agreed to do a mini album together.

"Kyle said he would produce one part of it and I would produce the other - we have got all these ideas and I know that he is up for it."

Paolo also explained how the release of his current record is being stalled, saying: "This album has already lingered around for more than I would have wanted it to.

"We missed a deadline last year and it just got put back and back, it was frustrating."

But the singer hasn't let that stop him preparing for his next release.

"I've thought about the third album and some tracks are there already," he said.

NUTINI PALS UP FOR MINI DEAL
ABOVE: Paolo Nutini
4th June 2009

PAOLO Nutini is planning to make sweet music with fellow Scot Kyle Falconer from The View.

Despite his new solo album, Sunny Side Up, hurtling towards No1 this Sunday, the Paisley prince is already preparing his next move.

Paolo told me: “Kyle from The View is such a good songwriter and he’s for real.

“In the early hours one morning we agreed to do a mini album together.

“Kyle said he would produce one part of it and I would produce the other.

“We have got all these ideas and I know that he is up for it.”

The wee singer is keen to get as much new music out there as possible after frustrations over the release of his current record.

He said: “This album has already lingered around for more than I would have wanted it to.

“We missed a deadline last year and it just got put back and back. It was frustrating.

“I’ve thought about the third album and some tracks are there already.”

Paolo, 22, thanks his mum and dad for inspiring his music – and love life.

He added: “My parents have had a bit of a fairytale relationship – they were together from 15.

“That gives me inspiration. My single Candy is about the buzz you get from a relationship.

“I don’t know whether I am a good boyfriend. Not everyone gets it right all of the time. But I think I am OK.”

I’m sure there are a lot of ladies willing to give you a try.

Sidste nyt er, at Sunny SIde Up udgivelsen er rykket en uge, til den 8. juni 2009 !!

May 21th 2009

I heard a really funny story about Paolo on the radio today.

While in Dunfermline Paolo went to cafe and the girl behind the counter got all nervous as she recognised Paolo. He got chatting with her and asked if she was going to the show that night, she said she wasn't as she couldnt get tickets and Paolo asked her if she'd like to be added to the guest list. The girl was so nervous she said 'No Thanks'

I'd love to have seen their faces Eeker

The girl in question called the radio station and the DJ asked her why she had said no, she said "Because he was too beautiful"

Poor girl must be kicking herself now.

Exclusive: Paolo Nutini in a panic as he's locked out of tour bus moments before gig

PAOLO NUTINI was locked out of his bus which had all his gear inside it - just minutes before a live radio gig.

The These Streets singer was on a tour of a radio station in America when he realised that no one had a spare set of keys for the minibus, which contained all his equipment.

To make matters worse, Paolo was up against the clock to get his gear out in time for the live performance on the airwaves in Portland, Oregon.

An insider told the Razz: "After the usual scramble to get everyone up, compounded by losing an hour going east, Paolo finally got to the station, where he was scheduled for an interview.

"Everyone got out of the tour bus and closed the front doors, then central locking kicked in, leaving the keys and equipment inside with minutes ticking to a live broadcast."

After several attempts to rescue the keys, a man from the neighbourhood offered to help.

The insider said: "Everyone pawed ineffectually at the bus, eventually standing back to watch the technical guy at the station and a local guy work on the bus from both ends. The local guy said he was from the 'wrong side of the tracks' and used to get into cars a lot.

"After about 10 minutes, the station guy managed to take the back window from the bus out, and Paolo and the crew finally got the stuff out, ran into the studio and set up just in time to perform live on air. The station guy was a complete hero."

Paolo, who received more acclaim in the States after playing the Coachella festival, is now home in Paisley having a rest before things go crazy in Britain, Europe and Stateside for the release of his new album, Sunny Side Up, on June 1.

He showed the Razz his album artwork, which features a dedication to his girlfriend Teri Brogan - in the form of a love heart containing initials PN and TB.

The illustration is by US artist Marq Spusta, who has formerly illustrated albums for the Black Crowes and Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers.

Paolo said: "I love the artwork and it contains a lot of references to my music."

He was inspired to get the special picture after looking at similar works to depict Janis Joplin's Big Brother And The Holding Company.

The colourful cover features a girl with a watering can which is a reference to the song Growing Up Beside You.

Behind a painting of him is a jar with the words Simple Things - a reference to the song about his dad.

And Paolo's alter ego Snake Derrick and the Vipers also features in a poster on the wall alongside the date of their first "secret" performance at T in the Park.

Introducing: Singing Sensation Paolo Nutini

Introducing: Singing Sensation Paolo Nutini
Singer Paolo Nutini has played with some of the music world's biggest groups. But the emerging new talent, who fuses folk, blues and reggae with his Joe Cocker-esque vocals, has come into his own. His sophomore album, Sunny Side Up, will be out June 2. Here are five things to know about the eclectic musician.

He's proud of his heritage: He hails from Paisley, Scotland, where he was raised – but is half Italian. And even though he talks with a Scottish brogue, he says, laughing, "I got me an Italian name!"

He's humble: At the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, Nutini, 22, wowed the crowd during his set – even though he downplays it. "There weren't too many people to start, but then a lot came," says the singer.

He's opened for Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones: "With the Stones it was amazing," he recalls. "I got to sing 'Love in Vein' with Jagger on stage. We rehearsed all set up in a hotel room. They were so warm and welcoming."

He's a romantic: "Relationships play a big part in my day-to-day," he says. "I'm in one. I've been in the bubble with her since we were 15."

His first single is called "Candy": Listen to it here:

Arts Diary: Nutini's at home back in the 'Old Country'

Published Date: 09 April 2009

THE artwork for Paolo Nutini's forthcoming album, Sunny Side Up, will have a distinctly Italian flavour to it, according to our man in Tuscany. Earlier this month, the Paisley-born pop sensation spent a whole day having his photo taken in and around the medieval hilltop town of Barga – ancestral home of the Nutini clan – and a snap like the one below will likely find its way onto the cover of his new record when it is released on 2 June.
With his last disc, These Streets, selling in excess of two million copies worldwide, you might expect the celebrity crooner to be mobbed by fans wherever he goes, but in Barga he's treated like one of the locals.

"Paolo and the photographer were more or less left alone while they were working here," says Keane, editor of the excellent local website, www.barganews.com (Keane's just got the one name, for reasons far too complicated to go into here).

"Paolo's been here every summer since he was a small boy, so he's well-known in the area. A few people stopped to say hello, but other than that they let him be."

Locals in Barga joke that anyone who speaks English in the town does so with a Glasgow accent, such has been the degree of emigration to the west of Scotland. It is estimated that some 60 per cent of the town's population have relatives over here, mainly in Glasgow, Paisley, Largs and Saltcoats. It's a two-way process though: among the ex-pat Scots with homes in the town are the artist John Bellany and Dunkeld pipemaker and piper Hamish Moore.

Locals hope Nutini will be back in town in July to perform at the Lake Angels Soul Festival – an event to raise money for an irrigation project in Rwanda. The singer has said he'll see what he can do.

"They need 20,000 Euros to set this thing up," says Keane, "and for Paolo to come over for the festival… well, that would really sort them out."

Pants for McCall Smith

THE musically challenged members of the Really Terrible Orchestra are back in Scotland after giving a triumphant performance in New York as part of this year's Tartan Week celebrations. Not only did the RTO sell out Manhattan's 1,500-seater Town Hall and receive a standing ovation, their bassoonist, a certain Alexander McCall Smith, who we're told also dabbles in fiction, evidently made a big impression on some of the female members of the audience.

Our source in the RTO tells us: "Not only did we get a standing ovation at the end, two pairs of white knickers were tossed on to the stage.

"We suspect they were for Sandy. I don't know who threw them – it was all a bit chaotic afterwards so I didn't really notice."

First Minister Mikado?

The RTO players were somewhat miffed that nobody from the Scottish Government made it to their big Manhattan gig, but apparently the First Minister has plans to make it up to them.

In advance of the performance, several members of the orchestra were invited on to The Andrew Marr Show and found themselves sharing a studio with none other than Alex Salmond. The RTO's conductor, "Sir" Richard Neville Towle, took the opportunity to ask the First Minister if he'd consider performing a turn from the Gilbert and Sullivan repertoire with them at some point in the future, and Eck gallantly offered to sing something from The Mickado. Could the diary humbly suggest a drag/falsetto version of Three Little Maids From School featuring Salmond and a couple of his colleagues? Under the circumstances, it's surely the least they could do.

Caught Live: Paolo Nutini

PLAYING at a secret South East London location last night, PAOLO NUTINI performed his latest tracks from new album Sunny Side Up.

Hunched over, with his eyes closed and head facing the floor, Paolo is an undeniably intriguing performer.

At times, the 22-year-old seems intent on pretending the audience aren’t even there.

But he later ditches his cool be serenading a sea of mesmerised female faces in the front row.

Where audience conversation is concerned, Paolo is a man of few words.

Between sips of red wine, he appears conscious fans may struggle to interpret his words through his thick Scottish accent.

But the few jokes he does crack are greeted by laughter.

Candy

The new record is packed with heartfelt, feel-good tracks written by Paolo himself.

The album’s debut single, Candy, is an uplifting ballad intensified by the young Scot's rich, soulful vocals.

Other tracks show his versatile style, while Worried Man is undoubtedly going to win a few listeners’ hearts and provide the backing track to a few break-up tears this summer.

  • Candy is out May 18th and the album, Sunny Side Up, is released June 1st.

Paolo Nutini photo session in Barga Vecchia

paolo-nutini-lake-angels-barga-009 Wearing a fashionably crumpled jacket and toting an acoustic guitar, the singer Paolo Nutini was in Barga today for a photo session that ran through most of the narrow streets of Barga Vecchia culminating in a final session at the Duomo  just before the light went as the sun went down behind La Pania.  A very busy day for Paolo that started early this morning with a presentation of vintage motorbikes at Villa Moorings and continued right through the day with meetings, greetings, autograph signings and photographs, photographs, photographs. If all goes well an image of Paulo in Barga will be used on his forthcoming album “Sunny Side Up” due to be released on June 2nd.

Nutini and his band, The Vipers, will herald the album’s arrival with a live performance at the upcoming Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival in Indio, California, set for Saturday, April 18th. In addition, Paolo has slated a number of other April dates, including a free show at San Diego’s Del Mar Plaza on April 19th. Furthermore, Nutini and The Vipers will perform at a number of Earth Day-related events around the Pacific Northwest, with shows in Portland, Boise, Spokane, and Seattle.  A full-scale North American tour will be announced shortly. In the UK all of the Scottish, London and Liverpool concerts are already sold out … London selling out in just under one hour of the tickets going on sale.

Late this evening Paulo returned to his base - the Hotel Villa Moorings where his final meeting was set up with members of the Barga Lake Angels. They were there to present him with a Lake Angels T-shirt and Honoury membership of the Lake Angels.

An honour which he rose to straight way by promising that if his calendar was free during July, then he would return to Barga with his band to play at this years Lake Angels Soul Festival. Considering that Paolo has only ever missed once being in Barga during July for as long as he can remember, then there is a good chance that come July 11, 12, or 13th he will be on stage for the Soul Festival 2009. Paolo Nutini Unveils "SUNNY SIDE UP"; Acclaimed Scottish Troubadour Announces Hugely Anticipated Sophomore Album; Collection to Be Heralded by First Single, "Candy," Set to Impact Triple A Radio in April; West Coast Live Dates Set, Including Coachella; "SUNNY SIDE UP" Released Everywhere on June 2nd

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - April 2, 2009) - Atlantic recording artist Paolo Nutini has announced early details of his eagerly awaited second album. "SUNNY SIDE UP" -- which follows the Scottish-born singer/songwriter's acclaimed 2007 debut, "THESE STREETS" -- arrives in stores and at all digital retailers on June 2nd.

"SUNNY SIDE UP" will be preceded by the first single, "Candy," which is due to impact at Triple A radio outlets nationwide in mid-April. Nutini and his band, The Vipers, will herald the album's arrival with a live performance at the upcoming Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival in Indio, California, set for Saturday, April 18th. In addition, Paolo has slated a number of other April dates, including a free show at San Diego's Del Mar Plaza on April 19th. Furthermore, Nutini and The Vipers will perform at a number of Earth Day-related events around the Pacific Northwest, with shows in Portland, Boise, Spokane, and Seattle. Joining Paolo Nutini on the upcoming schedule will be fellow Atlantic Recording artist Serena Ryder. (see below itinerary). A full-scale North American tour will be announced shortly.

Produced by Ethan Johns (Kings of Leon, Ryan Adams, Ray LaMontagne), "SUNNY SIDE UP" sees Nutini continuing to mine his arresting brand of soulful modern pop. Songs such as "Ten Out Of Ten" and "Coming Up Easy" display the gifted tunesmith's ever-growing knack for irrepressible melodies melded with insightful and intimate lyricism, all held together by Paolo's gritty and unpredictable vocal stylings.

In other news, Paolo recently teamed up with Sir Mick Jagger and Academy Award-winner Ben Affleck for a short film benefitting the UN Refugee Agency's emergency humanitarian efforts in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Entitled "Gimme Shelter," the documentary sets footage of the strife-torn DRC -- filmed by renowned cinematographer John Toll -- against Nutini's extraordinary new version of the classic Rolling Stones title track. "Gimme Shelter" can currently be viewed online at http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&VideoID=52090349.

Named as a "You Oughta Know" artist by VH1 and one of Rolling Stone's "10 Artists To Watch," Nutini burst into the spotlight as one of 2006's most acclaimed new singer/songwriters. "THESE STREETS" proved an international phenomenon upon its initial release, earning the Paisley, Scotland-born troubadour a cornucopia of critical praise and total worldwide sales in excess of two million. The album -- which yielded three top 10 Triple A hits, including "New Shoes" and "Last Request" -- was among the best-received debuts of 2007, receiving three-and-a-half stars from both People and USA Today, with the latter hailing, "It's been a while since a youthful pop upstart revealed the breadth of talent that... Nutini shows." The New York Daily News noted that "voices like Nutini's come around just a few times in a generation."

A uniquely charismatic live performer, Nutini toured nearly non-stop following the release of "THESE STREETS," headlining countless shows and appeared at some of the world's biggest festivals, including Live Earth, Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, Glastonbury, T In The Park, Montreaux Jazz Festival, Austin City Limits Music Festival, V Festival, and the Isle of Wight Festival 2007 -- where Paolo dueted with Mick Jagger on "Love In Vain" during The Rolling Stones' festival-closing set. What's more, Nutini served as support act on one of the biggest concerts in recent memory -- Led Zeppelin's now-legendary 2007 reunion show at London's O2 Arena, benefitting the Ahmet Ertegun Education Fund. He has since shared stages with a range of other musical icons, including a 2008 soul spectacular at Los Angeles' Hollywood Bowl which saw Paolo more than holding his own alongside Rock and Roll Hall of Fame members Etta James and Solomon Burke.

In addition, Nutini has also performed live on a wide array of high-profile national television programs, including NBC's "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," "Late Show with Conan O'Brien," and "The Today Show"; ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live!"; and two visits to his fellow Scotsman Craig Ferguson's nightly CBS talker, "Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson." Moreover, Paolo's songs have been featured in such network series as ABC's "Grey's Anatomy" and The CW's "One Tree Hill."

Lyt til 90 sek. af Paolos først singeludspil fra Sunny Side Up, CANDY:http://www.myspace.com/paolonutini

Exclusive: I needed Kings of Leon producer to help me finish new album, reveals Paolo Nutini

PAOLO Nutini placed a call to Kings Of Leon's producer to help finish his second album - after a year in the studio.

The Paisley singer-songwriter rang up Ethan Johns, the man behind Kings Of Leon's Because Of The Times album, to bring his experience on board for the follow-up to 2006's These Streets.

The result is Sunny Side Up, which is out on June 1 and Paolo says it is his best material yet.

"The album is coming out at last," Paolo, 22, said. "I wanted to make the best album I could.

"Up until the beginning of the year I was producing the record myself, something I hadn't done before. It has been an ongoing process since February last year.

"I got to the stage where I felt my abilities in that field were limited, so I approached Ethan."

The album was recorded in England, Ireland, Wales, New York and Los Angeles.

"I am proud of it," said Paolo.

"The album has turned out the way I wanted it to. It's titled Sunny Side Up because it is a positive record."

Scots fans will get a chance to hear songs from the new album when Paolo plays a series of Scottish dates to tie in with the release of his next single, Candy, on May 25.

He'll play Aberdeen Music Hall on May 16, Kilmarnock Grand Hall (17), Dunfermline Alhambra (18), Inverness Ironworks (19) and Glasgow ABC (20).

Paolo said: "We let people hear some of the songs at the Connect festival last year and at T in the Park. I'm looking forward to the tour including Dunfermline's Alhambra theatre because I have never played in Dunfermline."

Meanwhile, Paolo sent his sympathy to Leon Jackson on hearing news that the X Factor winner had been dropped by Simon Cowell and his label Sony after just one album.

"A lot of people on these shows are lucky to get a second album out," Paolo said. "I don't know much about Leon Jackson, but I wish him all the best.

"But he must have known the nature of that TV show when he walked into the audition. Simon Cowell is not someone I would trust with my career because, to him, you are just a little fish in a big bowl.

"I have never met him, but The X Factor is about being in it to win it. I'd see it as a hindrance to have the expectation that comes with winning."

Tickets for the shows go on sale at 9am on Friday 27th March and are available from  www.ticketmaster.co.uk or www.gigsinscotland.com

Exclusive: We get sneak preview of new Paolo Nutini album

ALMOST four months before its release, the Razz has had a sneak preview of Paolo Nutini's second album.

We can reveal the collection, a follow-up to 2006's These Streets, is called Sunny Side Up - and it's not going to disappoint.

The 12-track album starts with the 22-year-old's take on ska in track Ten Out Of Ten.

Supported by a warm horn section, it's a cracker and could be a contender for one of the singles to be released from the album, which is due to hit the shops in June.

Despite his youth, Paolo displays his dynamic talent and musical knowledge, nodding at heroes such as country king Johnny Cash and Leadbelly.

Paolo wrote all 12 tracks himself and clearly stuck to his guns when he said he wanted to be experimental.

Starting with ska, he goes into a world of bluegrass, country and ballads after working alongside Ethan Johns, who has produced for Kings Of Leon and Ryan Adams.

Paolo's band offer an excellent support to his voice and, like the first album, many fans may be fighting back the tears as their heartstrings are pulled by the emotional tracks.

The album was recorded in studios in England, Ireland, Wales, New York and Los Angeles and has drawn on influences from both sides of the Atlantic.

Next month, Paolo will play some of the new songs at an exclusive show in London then entertain a wider audience at summer festivals, from T in the Park to Glastonbury.

Paolo tried out some of the songs in front of his fans when he made a surprise appearance at last year's T in the Park, under the guise of Snake Derrick and the Vipers.

He then gave songs like High Hopes another airing at the Connect Festival in Inveraray, Argyll, and a sell-out gig at Edinburgh's Corn Exchange in August.

Since then, Paolo has been tinkering with the album, which he has also been producing himself, and we think it is a belter.

Here is our verdict on some of the highlights: TEN OUT OF TEN The album gets off to a flying start with a record that could become a ska classic.

With a summer release date, it sounds full of sunshine and should have everyone on their feet come festival season.

COMING UP EASY This soulful track harks back to a time before Paolo was born, conjuring up the sounds of the Stax andMotown labels with a modern twist towards the end.

If you hadn't read the name on the album, you might be hard pressed to believe that the sound comes out of a skinny white kid from Paisley.

TRICKS OF THE TRADE An infectious track and, along with Coming Up Easy, proves a showstopper.

NO OTHER Has a dramatic opening, then turns into a delicate love song, with lines about being separated from his love.

HIGH HOPES This has a Sixties feel about it. Influences for this wonderful mishmash could include Cat Stevens and Rod Stewart during The Faces era.

SIMPLE THINGS Begins like a Johnny Cash song, hitting high notes in the style of Roy Orbison. The song's lyrics, about cherishing the simple things in life like close family, pick up where These Streets left off.

I'm not performing at Classic Grand, says Nutini

CHART-TOPPER Paolo Nutini has warned fans not to fall for a rogue gig promoter who claims the Paisley singer-songwriter is to play an intimate concert at a tiny venue.

It was claimed the New Shoes star was to take to the stage at Glasgow’s Classic Grand on Thursday, May 7, but his management team insist the former St Andrew’s Academy pupil has agreed no such performance.

A spokesperson for Paolo told the Paisley Daily Express: “It has been bought to our attention that tickets have been put on sale for a Paolo Nutini show at the Classic Grand venue in Glasgow for May 7.

“Paolo and his management were not aware of this show and Paolo is unable to commit to playing anywhere on this date.

“We have advised Tickets Scotland and the venue to make refunds to anyone who thought they were buying tickets for a Paolo Nutini concert.

“We have also contacted the promoter and requested that Paolo’s name is removed from any listings.

“For up-to-date information on gigs and news from Paolo, people can sign up to the fan club on his website at www.paolonutini.com

“We will be making an announcement in the near future regarding Paolo’s future touring plans.”

One gig that Paolo will be performing at is the star-studded Sound and Vision charity concert at London’s famous Abbey Road studios on Thursday, February 26.

The talented Buddie will be joined by the likes of Paul Weller – who shot to fame as lead singer with The Jam – at the event, which will raise funds for Cancer Research UK.

Sound and Vision will be co-hosted by TV celebrity Dermot O’Leary and legendary DJ Bob Harris.

You can expect quite a collection of new music from established performers this year, says MTV . Topping that list will be the long-awaited new release and tour from Green Day , which has been on hiatus. Also on the list is My Chemical Romance , which closed out its last tour at MSG over the summer, along with Bruce Springsteen, U2 and a slew of others.

Not on MTV’s list is up-and-coming Scottish singer Paolo Nutini , who is expected this year to follow-up his debut effort, These Streets , which got some airplay over the past year. The record got mixed reviews, but I managed to catch Nutini at the Tarrytown Music Hall last year and he puts on a very decent show — if you can overlook the clusters of love-struck teenage girls.

Either way, once he gets done touring Europe he’s supposed to put out his second effort, and I’m curious if he’ll fix the glitches some critics hit him on. He leaned heavily on Motown-inspired ballads on These Streets, which make use of an impressive and unique singing voice. Based on the stuff he’s doing on tour, there could be some more hard-edged stuff on the new one, so we’ll see.

    Paolo Nutini's song struggle

    Friday, 2 January 2009

Paolo Nutini is in dispute with his record company.

The 'Last Request' singer says he has almost finished work on his next album but it is being held up because music bosses want him to make changes to the LP which he is reluctant to implement.

He said: "The album is getting mixed just now. I'm in the process of trying to fight against the changes that certain people want to make to it.

"I'm just trying to stick to my guns. Even that in itself is a bit of a challenge."

Despite the difficulties, the Scottish star says he is looking forward to releasing the follow-up to his 2006 debut 'These Streets' and playing live again.

He added to BBC Newsbeat: "I just want to get it out as soon as possible. I like the songs and I like the way they're put across.

"I've got one track especially, 'Pencil Full Of Lead', that I really want to play because I think that'll get everybody moving, everybody partying."

Paolo's bra-vura performance leaves the girls swooning

    Paolo Nutini

    Wednesday December 24 2008

PAOLO Nutini is trying to keep a straight face, but it's difficult to stay tight-lipped when you're constantly ducking to avoid airborne bras.

An unofficial head-count suggests the female-male ratio this evening is in the order of 20 to 1 and many in the audience are determined to show their devotion for the 22-year-old Scottish crooner in the traditional manner -- by showering him with frilly underwear. At moments, it's like a Tom Jones concert with shrieking 20-nothings in the place of manic housewives.

You can see why Nutini inspires such base devotion. He has the dusky looks of an Italian footballer who has given it all up for the life of a footloose gypsy; his husky voice suggests Rod Stewart with a hint of Stereophonics' Kelly Jones. During the encore he goes so far as to belt out a song while wearing a super-sized leprechaun hat -- a display of rock star poise that's hard to fault.

Nutini is at the end of a three-date residency at The Academy, where he's been road-testing material from his next album. On first listen, the new stuff feels a little jauntier and less overtly James Blunt-ish than his too- drippy-by-half 2006 debut 'These Streets'. He's also cultivated a curious -- and not entirely unpleasant -- appetite for ragtime: there's a knavish swagger to 'Shake It Here, Shake It There'; on 'Candy' Nutini and his backing musicians impersonate a Mexicana bar band, complete with fluttering brass and Mariachi drum rolls.

    Oldies

But it's oldies 'These Streets' and 'Last Request', as well as a soulful take on Christy Moore's 'Ride On', that really grab people's attention.

As he plunges into Top 10 hit 'New Shoes', the blizzard of lingerie even diminishes briefly. Singing with his eyes closed, Nutini seems too lost to really notice.

When his looks have faded and teenagers are bombarding someone else with their undies, you sense he'll still be going strong.

    Paolo Nutini's Hogmanay party

Paolo Nutini plays Radio 1's Big Weekend in Dundee in May 2006

Paisley singer/songwriter Paolo Nutini says he can't wait to play two Hogmanay gigs on the same day this New Year's Eve.

The New Shoes singer is opening the celebrations in Edinburgh before getting a police escort to Glasgow, where he's on stage before midnight.

He said: "Wherever anybody is in New Year, they're usually having a party."

The 21-year-old's also preparing to release the follow up to his debut album, These Streets.

    Hogmanay

Paolo Nutini is playing Edinburgh's new Concert in the Gardens event along with Groove Armada and Friendly Fires.

The singer/songwriter kicks off the party at 9pm before getting in a car and being driven to Glasgow.

I've got one track especially, Pencil Full Of Lead, that I really want to play

Paolo Nutini on playing tracks off his second album, out in 2009
He'll then headline the city's Hogmanay party in George Square and play through "the bells".

"It's good to be part of a street party," he said.

"It's better if you're on first. It's like the festival shows. It's where we've usually been on the bill.

"You're like the stepping stone on the way to the culmination of somebody's night."

And Paolo says he loves New Year because it gives everyone the chance to start again, regardless of what type of year they've had.

He said: "I just like the mood that it gets everybody in.

"Everybody seems to hear New Year and it opens everybody up.

"Maybe if the year wasn't so great for the person it gives them a bit of hope that the next one's going to be better and people celebrate that."

    New material

Paolo's been playing songs from his second album at festivals around the UK this year.

"I've got one track especially, Pencil Full Of Lead, that I really want to play because I think that'll get everybody moving, everybody partying," he said.

The musician's been producing the record himself and has worked in studios in England, Wales and Ireland and say he hopes it'll be out soon.

"It's getting mixed just now. I'm in the process of trying to fight against the changes that certain people want to make to it," he added.

"I'm just trying to stick to my guns. Even that in itself is a bit of a challenge.

"I just want to get it out as soon as possible. I like the songs and I like the way they're put across."

PAOLO NUTINI'S amazing year has seen him share a stage with some of the world's biggest names - including the planet's fastest man, Olympic sprint champ Usain Bolt.

But the singer is finishing 2008 with his own frantic race against the clock when he completes an amazing doubleheader at Hogmanay street parties in Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Paolo told Email: "They are both big prestigious events and it will be a special night for me so I will make the most of it."

On Hogmanay, Paolo opens the Princes Street Gardens Stage in Edinburgh before Glasvegas, Groove Armada and Friendly Fires perform on stages around the capital.

Then he hits the M8 motorway - with a police escort - to drive the 40 miles to Glasgow to appear alongside Idlewild, The Ray Summers and Bleachie, Europe's top Blondie tribute act, in George Square.

Paulo said: "I was disappointed not to play Edinburgh's Hogmanay in 2006 because of bad weather.

"I'm first on at Princes Street Gardens around 9pm. Then in Glasgow I'll play for 20 minutes before the Bells and 20 minutes after.

"Doing both shows on the same night is is a great honour but also very daunting."

Paolo - who celebrates his 22nd birthday on January 9 - will release his second album in the spring.

The Paisley-born star shot to stardom with his debut These Streets in 2006.

He's packed more into two whirlwind years than some acts achieve in a lifetime, appearing at T in the Park and Glastonbury, duetting with Mick Jagger and opening for Led Zeppelin.

Paolo said: "I'm going to be playing new songs at the Hogmanay gigs. There are a couple which are perfect for these shows and it's a good way to gauge reaction to the album.

"If they get people moving I'm going to be OK. I have a body of new work I'm very pleased with.

"The basic difference from These Streets is that the recording and production are a bit rougher. It has less of a sheen and musically, it's much more true to me."

After the Glasgow gig, Paolo will party with his family and girlfriend Teri Brogan in a city centre hotel.

"I'll be up all night. I won't be calling it a day until well into January 1.

"It's rare I get time off so if I get this night right it will be something to talk about for the rest of my life."

Paolo plans to hit the road again in 2009 to launch his as-yet-untitled album.

He said: "I want to play a lot more next year.

"Instead of trying to promote my records I'd rather just open myself up in front of an audience and say. 'These are the new songs - what do you think?'"

These Streets featured hit singles Jenny Don't Be Hasty, Last Request and New Shoes, which was used as the theme of a multi-million dollar advertising campaign for Puma sports footwear.

And Paolo revealed he had to turn down bizarre publicity stunts in Europe while promoting his first album.

He said: "In Portugal they don't have a TV show like Top Of The Pops or Later.... With Jools Holland to break new acts.

"My record label asked me to appear on a soap opera as it was my only chance of selling records there.

"I didn't do it. Can you imagine me playing New Shoes on the Portuguese version of Home And Away? No way."

Paolo Nutini speeds into island beach party

    bike

SINGER Paolo Nutini roared into an actionpacked surfers' party on two wheels.

The Last Request star zoomed across the sand on a quad bike on his break in Tiree last week before taking a windsurfing lesson and playing table tennis.

Paolo, 21, took girlfriend Teri Brogan on a three-day break on the Hebridean island for the annual Tiree Wave Classic windsurfing contest.

The Paisley-born chart-topper was happy to rough it in bunkbeds in the island's Hynish Centre, and even helped out in the kitchen.

And he also performed an impromptu gig for competitors.

Gordon Ritchie, of organisers GMFCo said: "It was brilliant that Paolo turned up. He enjoyed getting involved in all the activities.

"He was charming and good fun and his impromptu gig proved he's a class act."

A source close to the star said: "Paolo has fallen in love with Tiree and said it was great to get away from the glare of the celebrity world. It's a real chill-out place."

    News of the World:

    Back to the future

PAOLO LOOKS TO MUSICAL GIANTS OF YESTERYEAR FOR INSPIRATION FOR HIS NEW ALBUM

AT A time when most acts prefer to play it safe, rock heartthrob Paolo Nutini insists he wants to expand his horizons.

Instead of fretting about the notoriously difficult task of following-up a massively successful debut, he set himself an incredible challenge.

Turning down offers of high-profile producers and hitmakers to oversee the recording of his second album, he told his record label: “I’ll do it myself.”

And last night as he put the finishing touches to the new LP — which is due to be released early next year — Paolo admitted: “I’m nervous as f**k, to be honest.

“But I stand behind this 110 per cent no matter what kind of reaction it gets.

“I’ve pushed the recordings in the direction that I wanted.

“This album will prove I’ve got more to offer than just a pleasant song.”

Drawing on his extraordinary knowledge of music history, the 21-year-old, from Paisley, has looked towards the giants of yesteryear — including influential icons such as Louis Prima and Cab Calloway — for inspiration.

Paolo revealed: “I’ve been listening to a lot of the old swing bands. “I love the energy of all that stuff. They really go for it on those records.

“A lot of songs at the moment tend to point out all the things that are wrong in everyday life.

“But when you’re listening to Louis Prima or Cab Calloway or even more recent stuff from the ’50s and ’60s, things like The Coasters and The Drifters, they just sound like they’re having the BEST time, just singing about whatever makes them happy.

“I thought it’d be nice to come at it from the angle that you can be content with the most basic things, you know? I’ve got food in my belly, what’s there to moan about?

    Funky

“We’re living in troubled times but, sometimes, that’s when you need joyous songs the most.”

Work on the eagerly-awaited follow-up to 2006’s million-selling These Streets began in January at Ireland’s Grouse Lodge.

The state-of-the-art studio is a favourite with a string of top acts including Muse, Bloc Party and REM, who used it to record their chart-topping Accelerate album.

Paolo’s three-week stint there began on a high since it was the first time he and his band — now known as The Vipers — had been together since their unforgettable set alongside Led Zeppelin at London’s 02 Arena the previous month.

He told us: “It was a great way to start since we hadn’t seen much of each other since that amazing night.

“We just wanted to get away from it all and concentrate on writing and recording together. It was really important to me that we approached this record as a band.”

To reinforce that, Paolo deliberately chose NOT to tackle songs such as Rainbows and Funky Cigarette, which had been unveiled on tour.

He explained: “It was all about about collecting ideas, getting everybody writing, trying to get ideas off the mark.

“When we’re on tour, there are quite a lot of distractions eating away at your time so it can be difficult to do that.

“We focused on developing half the ideas and kept the other half, just little chord progressions and guitar riffs, so we could develop them on the road instead of trying to pull stuff out of fresh air.”

Ironically, the band had to move out of Grouse Lodge, because Glasgow-based rockers Snow Patrol were booked in to work on their A Hundred Million Suns LP.

Paolo joked: “We couldn’t really refuse. They’re Irish. It’s their country after all!” He added: “After that we moved about a bit. We did some recording back in Glasgow, some in London and we also went down to Wales.

“The View were there at the same time so we had a bit of a rendezvous in their studio.

“That was a good laugh. Those guys can go at it. They’re dead excitable. They just have loads of energy running through them.

“But they’re good guys to have around you in a creative environment.

“I heard the whole of their new album and, through the right speakers, played loud, it gets you going.”

But while The View have gone for a bigger sound this time round, Paolo’s new album will feature a more stripped-down sound in places and some new twists to his world-beating vocal delivery.

He explained: “In terms of recording, it’s coming from quite a traditional approach.

“I didn’t want everything to be forcing its way out of the speakers — I wanted the instruments to have space to breathe.

“Lyrically, I think it’ll say a little bit more than the first album. It’s a progression in the right way. The voice does sound a little different. It’ll sound more live on this record and not quite as clean.

“I’ve been hitting a few notes that I didn’t before, just slipping in and out of falsetto here and there.

“If you listen to all those old blues guys, they come up with melodies that are so cool and off the cuff.”

Paolo had already amassed a string of impressive songs such as the swing-driven Pencil Full Of Lead, Tricks Of The Trade, Sleepwalking and the solidly upbeat High Hopes by early summer.

Using the name Snake Derrick & The Vipers, he and the band unveiled several at T In The Park in July during a hush-hush set in the T Break tent.

He recalled: “That was a lot of fun. Everyone was dancing. We got a lot of positive reaction to the new material. It was really encouraging.”

Paolo and the band followed up with appearances at Edinburgh’s Edge Festival and this year’s summer highlight Hydro Connect, in Inveraray, Argyll.

More new songs, including Candy, Mellow Down Easy, Simple Things and Ritalin, went down a storm.

We're living in troubled times...that's when you need joyful songs most

Paolo laughed: “There was a point where there was a bit of a mosh thing going on down at the front. That’s the first time I’ve seen that at my gigs.

“I had a lot of people come up afterwards to tell me that the new songs had got their minds ticking.”

In between, Paolo — who famously duetted with Mick Jagger and The Rolling Stones at last year’s Isle Of Wight festival — managed to squeeze in a jaw-dropping performance with ’60s icon Petula Clark at Switzerland’s Montreux Jazz Festival.

The pair delivered a stunning version of the Peggy Lee classic Goin’ To Chicago Blues as part of a 75th birthday tribute to studio wizard Quincy Jones - the man who masterminded a string of million-sellers such as Michael Jackson’s Thriller, Frank Sinatra’s Sinatra At The Sands and Ray Charles’s Genius + Soul = Jazz.

Paolo explained: “Montreux is like heaven on earth for me.

“I’ve played there three times and every time has been incredible.

“Petula and I rehearsed in a little room and she was very down-to-earth. But when we got onstage she was full of sass and flash. It was amazing to see. I also got to do a version of Strawberry Letter 23. I knew that as a Shuggie Otis track but Quincy had produced a version for the Brothers Johnson that became a huge hit in America. It’s a really amazing funk track and I love the vibe of it so it was a complete thrill to get to do that.

“But even more amazing is that the Brothers Johnson version features a mind-blowing solo by the don of jazz guitar playing Lee Ritenour and HE came on to play with us. It was awesome, just a totally amazing experience.

“Afterwards Quincy himself came over to speak to me. He couldn’t believe I was from Scotland. So we talked a bit about haggis and St Andrews and he told me, ‘You’ve got a long future ahead of you’. It was an incredible compliment.”

Paolo also got to meet legendary jazz hero Herbie Hancock. He admitted: “He’s a heavy character. When I met him, I felt like I was shaking a real man’s hand, a guy who’s lived some life. He’s quite intense. But a true genius in every sense of the word.”

Fans of R&B queen Chaka Khan would have been stunned to see Paolo jamming Bo Diddley and Amy Winehouse tunes with her drummer and bass player later that same night.

Paolo grinned: “We were all together in a little smokey bar and decided just to go for it. We had a lot of fun.”

It all seems a million miles away from Paolo’s not-so-distant past selling T-shirts for pop band Speedway or racing back from music lessons at school to help out at the family’s Castelvecchi chip shop back in Paisley.

He grinned: “You do feel like you’re on another planet — it’s like somebody’s dropped something funny in your tea.

“One minute you’re chillin’ with Quincy Jones and a couple of days later you’re back in Paisley down at Paddy Malarky’s pub.

“You’re not ever quite sure what’s happened. But it’s cool. I like that contrast.”

Yet while he’s equally happy chatting about the giants of jazz, soul and R&B or discussing the intricate details of obscure folk and reggae records, modest Paolo reckons his amazing knowledge of music’s major currents and minor tributaries WOULDN’T have impressed his old schoolpals.

He insisted: “I was by no means the cool hipster who just sat in the corner with his Stax and Motown albums.

    Genius

“I’d be a liar if I said I didn’t have my dodgy tapes in the house. In school you were constantly focusing on what was in the charts and I went through stages of listening to a lot of stuff that hasn’t lasted.

“There was music around all the time. Some of it was inoffensive and it was just there but other stuff that, somehow, just got you.

“It’s the music that gets to you, the stuff that stays with you, that I’m interested in making.”

But despite the fact that only a handful of stars — including Prince and Beach Boys genius Brian Wilson — have been allowed to oversee their own albums at the age of just 21, the humble rocker plays down that incredible achievement too.

He explained: “The record company have been great where that’s concerned.

“When I played them the first batch of songs I’d done, they liked what they heard and told me, ‘Keep going’.

“As time went on, we got to the stage where we had the bulk of the record done.

“At the moment it feels like I’m in front of the goal and someone’s just given me the ball.

“I’m determined to make sure I put it in the net...I don’t want to hit the crossbar.”

Now Paolo — who earlier this month announced two special Hogmanay shows in Edinburgh and Glasgow to preview the album — has just a few final adjustments to make before plans for the record’s release swing into action.

He said: “I just wanted to express myself. I think people will appreciate the fact that there’s a bit of heart, soul, blood, sweat and tears that’s gone into this record.”

And he added: “I’m excited. There are more songs coming out of us as a band. There’s more chemistry between us onstage. It’s going to be a fun trip.”

    Your comments

I've seen him at Montreux Jazz Festival twice...being invited to that top class event three years in a row is quite an honour, and Paolo really deserves it.
And he gave quite an impression to the audience, many of them never had heard of him before.
But they surely will in the future !

Paolo Nutini gets first big royalty cheque and blows it on car for his mum

PAOLO NUTINI has splashed out on a TVR Chimaera sports car - but cannot drive it out of his garage.

The Scots singer snapped it up after finally receiving the first big royalty cheques for million-selling 2006 debut album, These Streets.

But the 21-year-old cannot drive and has gifted the car to his mum Linda as a thank you for supporting him.

    Paolo said: "It's a beautiful TVR Chimaera four-litre - a burgundy soft-top with a cream leather interior.

"All the power in the car is at the back so it feels like the Batmobile when it takes off.

"My mum and dad always supported me so it was a nice feeling to buy her the car."

Paolo - who scored hits with Last Request and New Shoes - hopes to pass his driving test so he can get behind the wheel.

He has been learning in an old banger which his parents use at their Paisley chip shop.

He said: "It's an old Renault Clio they use for deliveries so it stinks of fish and chips."

Paolo is set to join an elite club of Scots pop millionaires which includes Annie Lennox, Jim Kerr of Simple Minds and KT Tunstall.

He said: "A few big royalty cheques have come in.

"I put them into my bank account and didn't even look at them. It felt good.

"I probably have the means to be a millionaire but I'm not quite there yet."

Adding to his fortune is a £400,000 deal with Puma sportswear, who are using his hit New Shoes in a campaign.

To launch it, he performed at the Beijing Olympics and sung a surprise duet - Bob Marley classic One Love - with the world's fastest man, Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt.

The honour is the latest highlight in an incredible 18 months for the star.

He has also opened for the reformed Led Zeppelin, had a coast-to-coast tour of America and seen his songs used on hit TV shows Grey's Anatomy and CSI: Miami.

Paolo is enjoying fame and fortune - even if it sometimes has a down side.

He said: "I like going to movie premieres.

"I went to the opening of the new Batman film, The Dark Knight, in London and it was good seeing Christian Bale. But with that comes all the other stuff.

"Sometimes you'll get a real a******* come up and say, 'You can't sing for s***.' "Most people think you're cool but there are always others who want to have a go just to see how you'll react."

Despite his heavy schedule, Paolo has found time for longterm girlfriend Teri Brogan.

So does he have any plans to follow in the footsteps of Scots singerAmy MacDonald, who has just got engaged to footballer Steve Lovell?

"Am I getting engaged too? What, to Stevie Lovell? I don't want to break Amy and him up just yet," joked Paolo.

"I've no plans to get engaged. But am I still madly in love? Yes, I'd say so."

I'm learning to drive in an old Clio that stinks of fish and chips
