Getting The Kinks Out
Last weekend I did two festival shows…the Ripcurl Unleashed festival in Newquay and another one at Glastonbury Abbey opening for Ray Davies. I was headlining one night and opening for Ray Davies the next -- happy days! Ripcurl was on Saturday -- the whole line-up was pretty cool, and there was a really relaxed vibe backstage…all the dressing rooms were next to each other with big comfy cushions to sit outside in the sun, play a bit of guitar -- heaven! Didn't have much promo on at all, so got to see a good number of bands…Ruarri Joseph, Scott Mathews, and Newton Falkner were brilliant. We had Newton support us on a couple of shows last year, and he blew me away -- that guy can play guitar, man! Also managed to persuade Ruarri and Newton to come on and play "I Wanna Be Like You" in the encore, and that went down really well!
Paolo got mobbed by fans in Glastonbury! Get the scoop.

Casino Not-So Royale
Last Friday, we all flew out to Atlantic City to play a gig in a casino. I was really looking forward to it, but in some ways, it was a bit of a disappointment. The gig itself went OK -- the fans in Atlantic City were really up for it, and everybody was singing along. But after the show, I had to go straight up to my room because I've not turned 21 yet and was warned I'd get a hefty fine if I were found downstairs in the casino or bar. I didn't really want to risk it as I'd just played to half the people in the casino, and they all knew my face, so it was a quiet one for me I'm afraid whilst the band got sucked into blackjack and poker!
Awww! Well, at least Paolo went to some rockin' shows. Hear about 'em now!

Lollygagging Before Lollapalooza
Hey --
I came back from my holiday on Wednesday and another early call as soon as I got into Chicago. Me, the band, and the crew had to be up in time for a 5:45 call on WGN Morning News to play "Last Request." But on the bright side we were supplied with a lovely greasy breakfast, so I didn't moan too much! The only good thing about such a painfully early call time is we usually get to finish up quickly giving me the day to myself to have a look around and relax a bit.
Lollapalooza, here he comes! Get the lowdown on Paolo's performance.

Prince Paolo
Hey --
I've had a really chilled one this week. The only thing I've had was a festival at Carcasonne in the south of France! I arrived at about two in the afternoon -- the weather was unbelievable. My family was there as well, so before sound check, I had some time to slip away for a bite to eat. The festival itself is held in an outdoor amphitheater in the grounds of a castle with the rest of the town built around it, it was like a medieval village...even our dressing room was built in a spire! The band and I climbed the stairs to the top and had a few beers before the gig to take advantage of the sun and views....
So how did the show go? Find out!

Weddings, Parties, Anything
Hey --
The band and me were at the ICA in London for an iTunes gig on Saturday. (They're doing a different show each day for the whole of July.) It was good getting to do a more intimate gig for a change -- particularly in London. Ghosts were supporting -- didn't get a chance to go out and watch because I had a couple of interviews while they were on, but they supported us the last time we were playing in London at Brixton Academy a couple of months ago -- all nice guys.
Tue Jul 3, 2007Meet Paolo Nutini!
Hey --
I recently had the pleasure of being in Manchester, Tennessee for Bonnaroo. What a total freak show! Anytime you can get 80,000 people together in a field, good times are surely bound to happen….
The first thing I can tell you is that it is HOT in Tennessee. I don't think it has ever been as hot in my hometown of Paisley as it was at Bonnaroo. Smoking hot!!!!
I spent a lot of time in media tent, talking to a bunch of different radio station folks who had all traveled in for the festival. It was cool to get to hear all of the different types of American accents mixed together in one big room. After that, I was on a press conference with Dierks Bentley and Michael Franti. I was asked about Texas Tea, which is one of my favorite beverages, and I like to talk about almost as much as much as I like drinking it. After that, it was time for our set, which seemed to go over well although the band and I thought it was not really our most top-notch performance ever.
My day at Bonnaroo was capped off by running into my good friend Charles Attal. Charles and his crew are from Austin, Texas. They run Stubbs BBQ, and they also put on Lollapalooza and the Austin City Limits Festival. Charles is also the guy who helped teach me to drive in Luke Wilson's car the last time I was in Austin. Now that was top notch for sure!!!!

On Thursday, the band and I headed off to the studio to record a track for Radio 1 in the UK. They chose a couple of different bands to pick a song that had been released in a certain year -- I was given 1992 and chose "It Must Be Love," which was released first in the '70s but was covered by Madness that year and got to number six in the charts. It turned out quite well, but I was planning on finishing it on Friday night, but the hotel we were staying at in Park Lane had a bomb scare and all the roads were closed off so I didn't manage to get back. On Friday morning, I was at the Silver Clef awards in aid of Nordoff Robbins music therapy and won an award for Best New Act. Paul Weller presented me the award which was pretty cool -- I've been on tour with him in Germany and he's a great guy. I even got to catch up with him before I had to fly home the next morning. It was my Dad's 50th birthday on Saturday. My Mum and I arranged a surprise party in the Garden for him. We set up a marquee in the back for a casino themed party and got all the family and friends over for some poker, blackjack and roulette -- wish we'd been playing for real money! I'd have come out loaded! But it was great to have the chance to catch up with everybody, as I hadn't seen some of them for ages because I'm on tour so much! On Tuesday, we had a slot on TODAY. We did "Last Request" with Jim on piano, which made a nice change from the keyboard we usually use. We had to get up at 4 in the morning for a 5:05 call, which was a bit of a nightmare -- probably the one time jet lag has actually worked in our favour! I think it went well...it was a bit bizarre though because on before us was a cooking segment and outside they had a giant sandcastle competition, which was quite random. The show finishes quite early, so the band had the rest of the day off in New York but I had to do a couple of radio interviews. It wasn't all work though, as my manager arranged for Michael and me to go see my first baseball game! The Yankees won 5-1 on home ground against the Minnesota Twins. It was totally packed! Overall, I had a great week. I'm shattered now but got a couple of days off to try and get some sleep, thankfully!
Thu Jul 19, 2007Paolo Sees London, Paolo Sees France... Hey -- It was a big weekend of performances last weekend for the band and me. We started off in Paris on Thursday, where we performed at the Solidays Festival in the Hippodrome de Longchamps. The other bands that were on that day were the Sunshine Underground and the Editors. Thought I might have caught some of their set before I played but they were on at the same time as me...did manage to see some good French bands that I hadn't heard of before, so it wasn't too bad. The festival itself is held on behalf of the main charity in France that aims to raise awareness for HIV. 100,000 people go every year so I was happy to be involved and hopefully we helped raise some awareness for the condition. After the gig in Paris, the band and I drove on the bus overnight to London to play Live Earth. It was one of the biggest gigs we've played, so I got some friends down to see the show. All the acts were only allowed 15 minutes on stage, but we managed to squeeze in four songs, -- "Alloway Grove," "Last Request," "Jenny Don't Be Hasty," and Louis Armstrong's "Wonderful World." Gig went well I think, and afterwards I got to meet Damian Rice and Dave Grohl before watching the Chili Peppers and Foo Fighters play their sets. I've seen them live a few times, and they're always on top form! On Sunday, the last gig of the weekend was at T in the Park in Scotland where I was playing the main stage. It was good to have most of my friends and family in the crowd who all made the effort to come down and catch up. I looked over to the side of the stage mid-set and saw Damian Rice standing there, which was crazy -- I've been listening to his records for years, and there he was watching me! After the gig, me and my mates caught a bit of Ocean Colour Scene, Kings of Leon, and Queens of the Stone Age, who were all brilliant. The QOTA drummer is immense -- the guy just doesn't stop the whole way through the set! After the festival, I headed home to Paisley where I had the week off. Me and the girlfriend managed to head down to Alton Towers Theme Park for a couple of days before it all kicked off again. There's a new ride that they've just added called Rita that goes from 0-100mp/h in 2 seconds. Bloody brilliant, but couldn't walk straight for half an hour!! -- Paolo Check out the video for Paolo's newest single, "Last Request," here!
